Contributing to Positive Change, by Harnessing the Power of Documentary Films.
Linda Nursanti is the founder of Paradoc Film, a film community from Blitar that is committed to voicing various environmental and social issues through film media. Paradoc Film was founded in 2018 and has produced two documentaries, Lakardowo Mencari Keadilan (Lakardowo Seeking Justice)(2018) and Take Back! (2019). From the film Lakardowo Mencari Keadlian, Linda and the team aimed to mobilize support for the Lakardowo community’s struggle. They educated the public about the dangers of biohazard waste, especially fly ash and bottom ash, and invited viewers to be more critical toward industrial development. Linda and her team’s work was recognized by the 2018 Indonesian Film Festival and the 2018 Maya Cup as the nominee for The Best Long Documentary Film.
During her childhood, Linda experienced living in an industrially polluted neighborhood. She later realized the power of film and its potential to stimulate social change. Beyond producing the documentaries, she has also had an active role in several film festivals, held film screenings, and facilitated discussions in the film and environmental community in dozens of cities to expand the impact of the documentary. Lakardowo Seeking Justice has reached tens of thousands of views on Youtube. It ignited the enthusiasm of other residents who were in the same boat as Lakardowo, with students being moved to help both physically and materially, and Najwa Shihab specially inviting Lakardowo residents to the Mata Najwa event after watching the film.
Linda also launched an online petition addressed to the Ministry of the Environment to further the fight, demanding that they provide protection for children affected by toxic waste pollution around the factory in the village of Lakardowo. Currently, Linda, the people of Lakardowo, the Lakardowo advocacy team, and the Change.org team are in discussion with several human rights commissions and the Indonesian Parliament.
Linda’s experience in this journey made her realize the important role that film can play in an agrarian movement and wanted to share her knowledge through a short video-making program. Through this program, she wants to invite the public to make videos independently to support the movement. It is important that the journey or chronology of the issues they are facing is well documented to serve as evidence and a means of gathering support.
