Championing local food systems in collaboration with activists and researchers.
Nofri Yani is the Co-founder and Program Coordinator of the Camar Foundation in Padang, West Sumatra. Yani started volunteering with PMI in 2003 and then began working in several international NGOs after the 2009 West Sumatra Earthquake and the Mentawai tsunami in 2010. Her ability to facilitate Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (PRBBK) led her to become a community empowerment facilitator both in rural and urban areas. Active as a board member of the West Sumatra Disaster Risk Reduction Forum (FPRB) and a national facilitator in the preparation of a National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) municipality plan, Yani is also involved in several participatory research projects and the monitoring and evaluation of community empowerment programs with domestic and foreign researchers.
In 2015, Yani and her friends established the Light Maritime Foundation (Camar), which focuses on advocating for coastal areas and natural resource management based on local wisdom. Since being appointed as Program Coordinator in 2019, Yani has collaborated with friends in several NGOs in West Sumatra to carry out documentary film discussions, exchanging knowledge with experts, journalists, activists, and environmentalists in sharing sessions. All activities carried out aim to build the participation of young people in volunteerism and critical thinking. The Camar Foundation is currently collaborating with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries for Education and Alternative Livelihoods in the Pieh Island Aquatic Park Conservation Area (TWP) across 11 sub-districts. The Foundation is also a partner of the Australia Volunteer Program (AVP) and the Indonesian Farmers Union.
In March 2019, Yani succeeded in becoming one of the fellowship participants from the world research organization Bioversity International through The Indigenous Partnership for Agriculture and Food Sovereignty (TIP Fellowship Program). The program focused on documenting the Indigenous food system. For one month, she participated in fellowship activities in Meghalaya, India, and continued with various trainings in Rome, Italy. Yani presented her findings about the Minangkabau Community Food System at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome on July 10, 2019. In the future, she intends to realize the Indigenous Food Community Alliance (IFCA), by collaborating with activists across Indonesia and internationally.
