Cultivating an equitable food system by addressing food security and building resilience on local farms.
Beatriz Ferreyra is an Uruguay native, currently based in San Diego, California, where she has spent the last decade taking part in initiatives driven by earth stewardship, regenerative agricultural practices, and community innovation.
While working in outdoor education and service learning (as Program Director and Mentor / Facilitator for volunteer abroad programs in Costa Rica, Peru, and the Dominican Republic) Beatriz bore witness to the impact of the climate crisis on vulnerable communities. This experience motivated her to work with small farmers in her community who are growing nutritious food and improving local food security. She went on to work at the Solidarity Farm School as teaching staff and as a farm steward.
Since 2021, Beatriz has worked as the Climate Resilience Specialist at Foodshed Small Farm Coop, a farmer-owned and -led distribution cooperative of small and socially disadvantaged farmers in the San Diego area. In her role, she works closely with farmers, partners, and allies to look at agriculture as a natural climate solution. In June of 2022, the Foodshed Small Farm Coop launched the first Carbon Sink Incentive Program, a pilot with the intention to demonstrate the value of incentivizing at point-of-sale the volume of produce moved into the local marketplace that was grown using carbon farming practices and prioritizing equitable distribution to historically marginalized populations.
