Bhuvana Balaji works with Sukhibhava Foundation bringing education on Menstrual Hygiene Management to adolescent girls in urban and rural India. They aim to raise awareness on menstrual hygiene and destigmatize menstruation to create a gender equal society, wherein women have the agency and access to healthy, sustainable, and affordable menstrual hygiene practices. As the head of training and learning development, she designs, creates and plans the execution of the menstrual hygiene management curriculum to be taken forward in communities and schools throughout the country. Their curriculum engages with communities of varying cultural beliefs and traditions where the myths and taboos related to menstruation are discussed and questioned. Through Sukhibhava, they have initiated the biggest menstrual hygiene drive in India through The Period Fellowship. In addition to her work with Sukhibhava, Bhuavana is part of the Community Forest Rights-Advocacy and Learning, Narmada Bachao Andolan, Menstrual Hygiene Alliance, India and National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM).
