Fisher(wo)man, small business founder, advocate for independent small-boat fishers, and the advancement of gender and racial equity

Sarah Ecolano utilizes her lifelong experience working with sustainable, wild-catch fisheries to advocate for national policies that support coastal communities and strengthen the resilience of independent, small-boat fishermen and fisher(wo)men who play an important role in the (sea)food supply chain. In addition to working to advance food system reform, Sarah is also a vocal advocate for gender and racial equity initiatives. To Sarah, every social justice issue is also a gender issue and a food issue.

Sarah is the founder of mission-based e-commerce seafood shop, Copper River Fish Market (CRFM). CRFM helps bridge the gap between boat and plate, connecting seafood lovers to 100% origin-guaranteed, small-boat caught sustainable seafood. Every purchase helps support CRFM’s initiatives to increase food security in communities and local schools. Sarah is a James Beard Foundation Fellow, United States of Women Ambassador, Tory Burch Foundation Fellow and Alumni Council Member. CRFM was recognized as a 2022 FedEx Small Business of the Year, and in 2023, Sarah’s flagship smoked salmon product, “Log Cabin smoke-style,” is a top 5 finalist in the Good Food Awards, a national competition based on flavor and social merit.

When not fishing or campaigning for food policy reform, Sarah can be found exploring the windswept coastline of Alaska, practicing subsistence gathering, and cooking with seasonal ingredients.
