Strengthening the Capacity of Local Communities as the Main Proponents of Dugong Conservation.

Mikaela Clarissa Yempormase is a graphic designer who is currently working at an eco-travel agency called Sebumi.id. Sebumi.id is a company engaged in eco travel that prioritizes the value of sustainability for nature and communities in every destination.

While she was still in college, Mikalea was active in the university’s nature group and participated in a variety of community service activities. In 2015, Mikaela attended a conservation school organized by the Center for Orangutan Protection and became an active volunteer in the community. At the end of the academic year, Mikaela completed her final project by creating a digital campaign entitled Conservation of the Javan Gibbon, to help facilitate the campaign of The Aspinall Foundation.

Mikaela really loves things related to the environment, especially regarding fauna in Indonesia. She intends to dive deeper into dugong preservation in her father’s hometown in Maluku. The dugong population is dwindling and the hunting by local people that continues to this day has motivated her to provide education about various creative solutions for the residents closest to dugong habitat. One of her strategies is providing ecotourism training and helping to sell various products produced by local residents. The development of ecotourism at this time is instrumental in maintaining and preserving this area which is part of Indonesian natural heritage.
