Combining food sovereignty and eco-psychology to strengthen communities’ relationships to the land.

Myriesha Barber utilizes her background in community psychology, mental health, and agriculture to connect communities with the importance of their relationship to the land.

Myriesha has held many roles in her community as a mental health professional and advocate, and has worked with various community-based organizations to provide art therapy programming to inmates, increase community engagement in local issues, and increase local food sovereignty. She participated in Food Corps, a sector of Americorps, and led efforts at two K-8 schools in Detroit to educate students on gardening and nutrition, and to create culturally affirming experiences that celebrate and nurture the whole child and school community through food. Myriesha also leads Greening the City, a community-powered school garden initiative.

Myriesha is passionate about the healing and liberatory potential of relationships to nature, and how those relationships are vital to intersectional climate change solutions. She has worked closely with the Alliance for Ecotherapy & Social Justice (AESJ) which provides social justice-oriented ecotherapy education and leadership aligned with community care, and is an advocate for social justice and intergenerational healing for BIPOC folks. Myriesha is currently developing Black Mother Earthś Permaculture Sanctuary, a natural sanctuary that centers black mothers, families, and birth workers and is focused on holistic health education, traditional birth practices, and permaculture.

Myriesha holds a BA in Psychology and Sociology from Bowling Green State University and an MA in Depth Psychology with a specialization in Community, Liberation, Indigenous, and Eco- Psychologyś. She is currently completing her dissertation for her Ph.D. in the same program. She loves her family, gardening, good music, art making, and all things herbs.
